File Transfer to or from Starnet
E-mail
for smaller files email remains the simplest approach. All files sent via email should be stuffed (Mac) or zipped (PC). Besides compressing it, the file compression puts a 'protective shell' around the file, so it is well worthwhile compressing even the smallest files.

Stuffit & DropStuff (Macintosh) is available from from http://www.aladdinsys.com |

WinZip (PC) is available from: http://www.winzip.com/ |

|
 |
Procedure:
Compress the file(s) you wist to send us. Attach the resulting archive to an email message. Describe the job in the body of the email message.
Note: When using winzip, please do not create a self extracting archive (a *.exe file). Our mail server will not accept these, as they look similar to many viruses.

FTP
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is a very convenient and fast way to transfer files directly to a remote server. As before, All files sent via FTP should be stuffed (Mac) or zipped (PC). In addition to the file compression software, you will need an ftp client; Fetch for Macintosh and WS FTP for PC are what we use and would recommend.
 |
Fetch is a user-friendly Macintosh FTP client; it allows point-and-click, drag and drop file transfers to and from any machine with an FTP server, over a TCP/IP network. Fetch is free to users affiliated with an educational institution or charitable non-profit organization; all other users may purchase a license. If You Are Behind a Firewall
If you are able to browse the internet, but unable to use FTP, your company may well have a firewall. In this case you may have to configure your FTP client or browser to 'see', and get past, the firewall. We suggest you contact your firewall or security administrator.
